Memory System Compression and Its Benefits
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents an overall analysis of the redundancy in the information (addresses, instructions, and data) stored and exchanged between the processor and the memory system and evaluates the potential of compression in improving performance, power consumption, and cost of the memory system. Analysis of traces obtained with Sun Microsystems’ Shade simulator simulating SPARC executables of nine integer and six floating-point programs in the SPEC CPU2000 benchmark suite yield impressive results. Well-designed compression schemes may provide benefits in performance, power, and cost that far outweigh their overheads constituting extra time, logic, and power for compression and decompression. This will be more so in the future since the speed, size, and power consumption of logic (which will be used to perform compression/decompression) are improving and are projected to improve at a much higher rate compared to those of interconnect (which will be used to communicate the information), both on-chip and off-chip. Keywords— Address compression, bandwidth, cache, costeffective design, data compression, entropy, instruction compression, latency, lossless compression, low power, Markov models, memory, register file, storage, traffic.

Implementation of VlSI Based Image Compression Approach on Reconfigurable Computing System - A Survey
Image data require huge amounts of disk space and large bandwidths for transmission. Hence, imagecompression is necessary to reduce the amount of data required to represent a digital image. Thereforean efficient technique for image compression is highly pushed to demand. Although, lots of compressiontechniques are available, but the technique which is faster, memory efficient and simple, surely...
متن کاملAn Improvement in WRP Block Replacement Policy with Reviewing and Solving its Problems
One of the most important items for better file system performance is efficient buffering of disk blocks in main memory. Efficient buffering helps to reduce the widespeed gap between main memory and hard disks. In this buffering system, the block replacement policy is one of the most important design decisions that determines which disk block should be replaced when the buffer is full. To o...

متن کاملCompressed NVRAM based Memory Systems
In this paper we examine a 2-level memory system that uses emerging nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) technologies to build a main memory system with DRAM acting like a cache. We discuss the architectural aspects of such a structure including power-performance tradeoff and how compressed NVRAM storage can help. The analysis indicates that the power benefits of using emerging NVRAM technologies can be ver...
